How the Trial Spawner Works in Minecraft

The Trial Spawner is a new type of spawner found in the Trial Chambers. It has different mechanics from the classic mob spawner and is important for obtaining unique loot items in the 1.21 update. To access them currently, you will need to turn on experiments. If there are any changes, an updated video will be provided.

Finding the Trial Spawner

The Trial Spawner is located in the Trial Chambers. It can be found in different locations within the Trial Chamber, such as the combat chamber and the corridor. Both of these areas can have multiple Trial Spawners. The spawning of mobs isn’t affected by light level; mobs will spawn at any light level from the spawner within a four-block spherical radius.

Spawning Mechanics

Spawning Range: The Trial Spawner has a range of 14 blocks. The player must be within this range to start spawning mobs. Since Trial Spawners can be close together, you might want to be within range of only one at a time.

Spawning Interval: The Trial Spawner will attempt to spawn a mob every 2 seconds when you are within range. It quickly spawns mobs, and once you kill a mob, it will spawn a new one rapidly.

Simultaneous Mobs: This is the number of mobs alive at one time from a single Trial Spawner. For most mobs, this is three. For baby zombies, it’s two, and for the Breeze, it’s one. For each additional player, 0.5 is added for the Breeze and baby zombies, and one is added for other mobs. This is different from classic mob spawners, as it only allows a certain number of mobs to be alive at once. Note that slimes broken into smaller mobs do not count towards the simultaneous mob count.

Total Mobs: This is the total number of mobs a Trial Spawner can spawn. For most mobs, it’s six, and for the Breeze, it’s two. For each additional player, the total mobs increase by one for the Breeze and two for other mobs.

Types of Trial Spawners

There are four different types of Trial Spawners, identifiable by the blocks surrounding them. Each category has an equal chance for a mob to spawn from that Trial Spawner.

  1. Breeze: This is the only location where Breezes spawn in the game. The Breeze is a new mob that fires wind charges, knocking back the player. They move quickly and can jump far. When killed, they drop Breeze Rods.
  2. Melee: Mobs in this category include zombies, husks, and spiders.
  3. Small Melee: This category includes silverfish, baby zombies, slimes, and cave spiders.
  4. Ranged: Mobs include the Stray, skeleton, and the new Bogged mob. The Bogged is a skeleton variant that spawns in swamps and mangrove swamps. They can be sheared to get red and brown mushrooms, fire poison-tipped arrows, and drop one poison-tipped arrow when killed.

Loot from the Trial Spawner

After defeating the total mobs from a Trial Spawner, it will eject loot items every 1.5 seconds. This happens for each player the spawner has detected. There is a 50% chance to get a Trial Key. The other 50% chance includes items like glow berries, emeralds, baked potatoes, golden carrots, ender pearls, potions of regeneration, and potions of strength. These items are meant to help you combat the mobs in the Trial Chamber.

The Trial Key can be used to unlock a Vault, which provides items like Tridents, Diamond gear, the Guster Banner pattern, the Bolt Armor Trim smithing template, enchanted books, wind charges, and the ominous bottle. The armor trim and banner pattern are only found through the Vault. Vaults are usually found in the same room as the Trial Spawners.

Cooldown

After you defeat the total mobs and the loot items are ejected, the Trial Spawner will enter a 30-minute cooldown period where it will not spawn any mobs.

The Ominous Trial Spawner

You can turn a Trial Spawner into an Ominous Trial Spawner by drinking an ominous bottle, which gives you the Bad Omen effect for 100 minutes. The level of the Bad Omen effect can be from 1 to 5.

When a player with the Bad Omen effect is within a 14-block range and line of sight of the Trial Spawner, it will turn into an Ominous Trial Spawner and start an Ominous Trial. The trial lasts 15 minutes, and the level corresponds to the Bad Omen effect.

The Ominous Trial Spawner spawns mobs with different levels of equipment, summons projectiles or lingering potions over players or mobs, and doubles the total mob count for mobs that can’t wear armor. When the spawner turns ominous, it despawns any current mobs and can be activated even if it was on cooldown. A useful strategy is to defeat the regular trial first, let it go on cooldown, and then start an Ominous Trial to reactivate it, allowing you to get both a Trial Key and an Ominous Trial Key.

After defeating the total mobs from the Ominous Trial Spawner, there is a 30% chance it will eject an Ominous Trial Key. Other possible items include baked potatoes, steak, golden carrots, rotten flesh, potions of regeneration, and potions of strength.

The Ominous Vault

The Ominous Trial Key is used to unlock an Ominous Vault. These vaults are surrounded by red candles, red glazed terracotta, and tough blocks. They are found in the combat chamber and in rooms connected to the corridor, specifically in a three-story tall area with decorated pots.

Unique items from the Ominous Vault include the Flow Banner pattern, Flow Armor Trim smithing template, the Wind Burst enchanted book, the Creator music disc, and the Heavy Core. All these items are exclusive to the Ominous Vault. The Heavy Core is particularly valuable as it is needed to craft the Mace, a weapon that accumulates damage based on how far the player has fallen. The Ominous Vault will eject two to six items and can also provide other loot like Diamond gear, blocks of iron, golden apples, enchanted golden apples, emeralds, and wind charges.
