The Mace is a new weapon that inflicts damage based on how far you fall. It can deal massive damage, especially with the right enchantments and the smash attack. However, it has a durability of 500, which is lower than most weapons—about a third of the durability of a diamond sword. Every time you use the Mace, it loses one point of durability. This guide will explain how to repair the Mace and cover the relevant enchantments.
Combining Maces
The first way to repair the Mace is by combining two Maces in the crafting grid or a grindstone. This adds their durabilities together and provides a 5% bonus. However, using a grindstone will remove any enchantments on the Mace. This method is likely the worst way to repair it, as obtaining the Heavy Core needed to craft a Mace is difficult.
Repairing with Breeze Rods
You can also repair the Mace using Breeze Rods. When you use a Breeze Rod with the Mace in an Anvil, it increases the durability by 25%. Breeze Rods are items dropped by the Breeze mob. Killing a Breeze typically drops one to two Breeze Rods, but with a Looting III sword, this can increase to four to eight rods.
The Breeze is found in the Trial Chambers, specifically from a trial spawner that spawns Breezes. This elusive mob moves quickly and jumps far. It is immune to arrow and Trident damage, so you must get close to kill it.
Using a Breeze Rod to repair the Mace increases the “prior work penalty” on the Anvil. This means it will raise the experience level cost for future repairs or enchantments. You can use a grindstone to remove this penalty, but it will also strip the Mace of any enchantments.
The Unbreaking Enchantment
The Unbreaking enchantment can help preserve your Mace’s durability. It reduces the chance that durability will be consumed with each use. The maximum level is Unbreaking III:
- Level I: 50% chance durability is used
- Level II: 33% chance durability is used
- Level III: 25% chance durability is used
You can apply the Unbreaking enchantment to the Mace using an Enchanting Table.
The Mending Enchantment
Finally, the Mending enchantment is a treasure enchantment. You cannot get it from an Enchanting Table, but you can obtain it by fishing, finding it in loot chests, or through villager trading. Villager trading is the easiest method; look for a Librarian villager with an enchanted book trade at their first level. You can break and replace their Lectern until the Mending trade appears, as long as you haven’t traded with them yet to lock in their trades.
You must apply the Mending enchantment to the Mace using an Anvil. Mending repairs the item’s durability using experience orbs you collect. One experience orb will restore two durability points to the Mace if it is in your hand or off-hand. If you have multiple items with Mending equipped, one is chosen at random to be repaired.
Considering the Mace’s low durability, Mending is highly recommended. It pairs well with the Mace since you will be killing mobs and gaining experience.
